Watts & More WATTS

I just got one of these today, Plugged it in, and then the cord from my APC ups into it.

Running :

1 asus server xeon quad core & 2 x 500 gig hdds
1 asus intel core 2 duo & 4 x 160 gig hdds
1 dell power connect 5224 managed switch
1 dell 24 port gigabit switch ( non managed )
1 Linksys 24 port 10/100 switch
1 sonicwall tz210
1 15″ dell lcd
1 wd 2tb nas drive
1 wd 1tb usb drive
1 apc 1500 ups
2 poe adapters 1 for voip phone & 1 for WAP
1 shuttle computer indel core2 duo 2.2 2 hard drives inside

All this, running as we speak, and pulling 332watts. Trying to figure out what exactly my power consumption for a single month is for this server rack foll of goodies is, 332 watts isn’t really to bad considering i’m running a pile of gear..

WAP & Wiring.

Got more time this weekend, the wife & little monster helped me run some cat5e for the main house Wireless Access Point, a Engenius 9550 wireless N with a POE injector at the other end.

Here you see it, mounted in the middle of the house @ the top of the stairs.

Windows 2008R2 Storage Server & iscsi.

Well, I have been playing with Freenas8.0.x, and wanting to learn the Microsoft version of iscsi. This weekend I got a few spare moments to tackle this. I have a test box i use for playing / learning on so i popped in the 2008 Storage Server dvd ( after downloading from Miscrosoft Technet site ) and installed the main os, then downloaded the iscsi software.

Took me a few trys, after installing it 3 times, I learned that the problem I was having was related to the iscsi ports being blocked by windows server firewall. After creating a rule to “allow” it worked 100%.

So now, do I move to WSS 2008 OR stay with Freenas.

The box, yep! Just sitting on the floor of the server closet 🙂

Tame, those fans

Having some trouble with the fans in my 1U ASUS 4 bay server ( RS120-E4 / PA4 ) Using a Core2Duo 2.4 with 4 gigs ram & soon to be 4 2tb drives, this beast makes noise.

I did do the bios update and now it has smart fan II, however it’s useless smart fan II the machine is still loud, i know in side the unit it has controlable fans *5 pin* they should be able to go to a WAY lower rpm, like the other brother server under it, those fans sit around 800-900rpm and are so quiet.

The new RS120 won’t get much of a cpu load as a storage server so i don’t really think it will get warm, i will monitor it for sure tho.

Doing some research i found that the asus motherboard uses a Winbond chip W8362 witch controls the fans and monitors the temp at different zones inside the server.

Researching and googling a little, i came across this.

SpeedFan 4.43 software, it aparently talkes to the winbond chip and will allow you to slow the fans down.

Stay tuned, i will install windows and test this out 🙂

screen shots of the software.

**Update**

well doing some more research, i found that the fans that are in it ( 5 wire AVC) are the units that make so much noise. Im going to email the company and see if they have 24V version, if they do ill replace them with that. If they don’t well ill keep them unplugged for now.

Picture of the fans,

Model is DF04056B12U they are 12V high rpm high air flow VERY LOUD fans, funny enough the server thats under it uses the same fans and are dead silent 🙁

Fan’s inside.

Actual Fan.

Bake That BlueRay Player!!

Well, I was given a blueray player for free, it would work then wouldn’t. The video signal over HDMI would stop and start randomly. Very strangely I was reading a fix my video card with a oven thread on HardForum.com and well I thought i would give it a shot.

The Board reverse side, removed from the Player. Note the video processors on the bottom.

The board in the Oven pan, note the video chip right side up.

Baked @ 350 for 8 min, let it cool off, put the board BACK inside the BD player, turned it on and watched a movie for 15 min…

IT WORKS!!! OH YEAH!!!

Both 1U’s Installed

Got the server backup, * duh your able to see this blog* Even got the new Storage server installed and mounted. Now to configure it & order the new drives. For now im just going to tinker and configure and learn more about 2008R2 Strage server on 4 160 gig drives.

New Man Land

Well, kinda all moved into the new house ( yep bought a house ) When we picked out this house, i claimed a room for my work office ( i work from home base ) and a room for all my computer and electronics. This way the wife won’t have any of my mess around the house, and i won’t have to use the kitchen table for projects 🙂

Desk, being built.

Desk all done.

Power Bars, i bought 2 Snap on power bars from Costco, each power bar has 12 outlets, with a braker at the end.
