Storage Server Build.. Dell R310 & 10G Connection :P

After a few months of collecting parts and waiting, I finally have my FreeNas box up & running. I created a little video of what im using and what’s inside.

Dell R310 1u Rack server ( they are quiet so i picked it )
8gigs ram, will move to 16 or more if needed.
4 x 2tb WD red drives.
Idrac ent ( must have on all servers )
Malenax 10gig PciE SFP+ card with cable.

Enjoy the video,

Drawing for my layout…

Doing some http://www.gliffy.com drawings.  Love this website, makes your network drawings so easy to read and bubbly.  LOL !!! 10 Gigabit Link is dirt cheap so why not use it.. I’m not running copper 10G that’s still a bit pricey. Instead I’m using SFP+

I forgot to add iDrac links to the other Dell servers in this diagram, anyways ALL servers have Idrac Enterprise..

New Cluster Setup

Since I have been playing with cheap servers ( low cost ) but Enterprise quality. I decided to start playing more and more with ESXI 6.0. playing with all the paid features and seeing what the systems can actually do I started having more and more fun, plus learning a-lot. I don’t get to play with this type of stuff at work, just fix the hardware.  So i grabbed a few servers from a local recycling company that refurbishes them & warranty’s them.

I traded in the R710 for two machines.  A R210 & R610. My goal is to buy another R610 & a R310, this will allow me to build a cluster and move LIVE virtual machines from one machine to the other with out disrupting service. ITS A HOME LAB but it’s learning and having fun doing it, hey ya never know maybe this will come in handy later in the future..

So the goal is :

2 R610’s with 64gigs ram in each and DUAL 6core xeons

R310 with 4 x 2tb drives & 10gigabit SFP+ link for each server

R210 a Vcenter controller.

I also just started playing with Veeam, DAMN this software is free and freaking Awesome !!  I installed it on a Dedicated Spare Optiplex 790 with 8 gigs ram and a 1tb drive running windows 7 pro, this allows me to RDP to the box and start manual virtual machine backups. I’ve actually backed up all my vms off the R710 and pushed them back to the new R610 with out any issues. HUGE smiled that day!!
